God Is Good — All the Time

A Reflection on the Goodness, Graciousness, and Righteousness of God

One of our family’s favorite expressions is the timeless phrase:“God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good!”

This past Sunday during worship, we focused on that very theme: the goodness of God.

But let’s be honest—living in a broken world, surrounded by other broken people, it can be hard to hold onto that truth. Life’s messiness has a way of blurring our vision. Pain, injustice, and disappointment can crowd out our confidence in God's character. Sometimes we see the bad more easily than the good. Sometimes we focus more on the depravity of people than the grace of God. And sometimes, we interpret life’s unfairness as a personal offense against our sense of righteousness—rather than a distortion of God’s.

But here’s the point: It’s not about our goodness. It’s about God’s. It’s not about our grace or righteousness—but His.

God Draws Near - Because He Is Good

In 1 Kings 3, we’re reminded of this truth in a powerful way. God draws near to Solomon, not because Solomon has everything in order, but because God desires to draw near.

He doesn’t wait for every idol to be torn down. He doesn’t demand completed holiness before showing up. He comes—because He wants to.

The incarnation is the ultimate expression of this. God came to us in Christ at just the right time—not when humanity had cleaned itself up, but while we were still lost, still sinful, still broken.

And He still does the same today.

God seems far more interested in our response to His presence than in our perfection in preparing for it.

God Goes Above and Beyond

When God appeared to Solomon, He offered an extraordinary gift:“Ask for whatever you want...”

But what’s remarkable is that God didn’t stop with Solomon’s request. He gave more—far more—than Solomon asked for. Riches, honor, peace, and influence were added alongside wisdom.

Likewise, when Jesus came, He didn’t just reveal the Father. He laid down His life. He offered redemption, reconciliation, and resurrection. He gave everything.

God’s goodness is extravagant. His grace is abundant.

And yet, He never gives based on our merit. Not then. Not now.

God's Righteousness Is the Common Thread

Here’s where we need to be careful. We often judge others harshly for one flaw while excusing those we admire. We categorize people as wholly righteous or wholly despicable—based more on our preferences than on God’s truth.

But God’s ways are not our ways. His methods are flawless because they flow from His righteousness, not ours.

God blesses saints and sinners alike. He uses the mature and the immature, the selfless and even the selfish. Why? Because He is God. And He can do whatever He wants with whomever He chooses—for His purposes and glory.

A Challenge to Reflect

So here’s the challenge: Take a look back over your life—your highest milestones and lowest valleys. Ask yourself:

Where did God show Himself to be good? Where did He display grace you didn’t earn? Where was His righteousness at work behind the scenes?

Train your heart to recognize His fingerprints on your story. Let it stir up gratitude. Let it lead you to praise.

Because the truth still stands:

God is good all the time. And all the time, God is good.

With you for His glory,

A.M. LaMouria
